Woman says she’s too ‘educated’ to be kicked off New York train
By Liz Goodwin

Loud cell-phone talkers strike again!

A woman traveling on New York's Metro North train line was recorded by a fellow passenger telling train employees that she is too "well-educated" to be told to quiet down and not use profanity in her cell-phone conversation.

"Do you know what schools I've been to? How well-educated I am?" she asks the train employee, who is seen explaining to another employee that she asked the passenger to stop using the "F-bomb."

"I'm sorry do you think I'm a little hoodlum?" she asks, then demands her money back and dares the conductor to stop the train.

The person who originally uploaded the video to Youtube (who has since removed it) said in the description that the woman "was talking too loud on the train when the conductor politely asked her to keep it down and stop using profanity or to take it to the vestibule." After the altercation, the conductor came on the loudspeaker and reminded people to keep conversations quiet, "especially those people who went to Harvard or Yale or are from Westport."

Last month, a woman was escorted from a quiet car in an Amtrak train by police after she chatted loudly on her cell phone for most of the 16-hour journey, and then became angry when passengers asked her to stop.

omg i'm laughing so effing hard here. keep it classy lady.

sometimes i wish i could tell people on the CTA to keep it down, but i chicken out waaaay too easily.

Inside the raid that killed bin Laden

By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press – 1 hr 17 mins ago

WASHINGTON – Helicopters descended out of darkness on the most important counterterrorism mission in U.S. history. It was an operation so secret, only a select few U.S. officials knew what was about to happen.

The location was a fortified compound in an affluent Pakistani town two hours outside Islamabad. The target was Osama bin Laden.

Intelligence officials discovered the compound in August while monitoring an al-Qaida courier. The CIA had been hunting that courier for years, ever since detainees told interrogators that the courier was so trusted by bin Laden that he might very well be living with the al-Qaida leader.

Nestled in an affluent neighborhood, the compound was surrounded by walls as high as 18 feet, topped with barbed wire. Two security gates guarded the only way in. A third-floor terrace was shielded by a seven-foot privacy wall. No phone lines or Internet cables ran to the property. The residents burned their garbage rather than put it out for collection. Intelligence officials believed the million-dollar compound was built five years ago to protect a major terrorist figure. The question was, who?

The CIA asked itself again and again who might be living behind those walls. Each time, they concluded it was almost certainly bin Laden.

President Barack Obama described the operation in broad strokes Sunday night. Details were provided in interviews with counterterrorism and intelligence authorities, senior administration officials and other U.S. officials. All spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive operation.

By mid-February, intelligence from multiple sources was clear enough that Obama wanted to "pursue an aggressive course of action," a senior administration official said. Over the next two and a half months, Obama led five meetings of the National Security Council focused solely on whether bin Laden was in that compound and, if so, how to get him, the official said.

Normally, the U.S. shares its counterterrorism intelligence widely with trusted allies in Britain, Canada, Australia and elsewhere. And the U.S. normally does not carry out ground operations inside Pakistan without collaboration with Pakistani intelligence. But this mission was too important and too secretive.

On April 29, Obama approved an operation to kill bin Laden. It was a mission that required surgical accuracy, even more precision than could be delivered by the government's sophisticated Predator drones. To execute it, Obama tapped a small contingent of the Navy's elite SEAL Team Six and put them under the command of CIA Director Leon Panetta, whose analysts monitored the compound from afar.

Panetta was directly in charge of the team, a U.S. official said, and his conference room was transformed into a command center.

Details of exactly how the raid unfolded remain murky. But the al-Qaida courier, his brother and one of bin Laden's sons were killed. No Americans were injured. Senior administration officials will only say that bin Laden "resisted." And then the man behind the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil died from an American bullet to his head.

It was mid-afternoon in Virginia when Panetta and his team received word that bin Laden was dead. Cheers and applause broke out across the conference room.

holy shit you guys, i felt like i was watching a movie when i read this article. MY GOD. ST6 YOU GUYS ARE SO FUCKING AWESOME. hollywood was probably having a boner when they saw this.

I MEAN GOD LOOK AT THEIR INSIGNIA AND THEIR LOGO.

IT'S A FUCKING BALD EAGLE, WHICH WE KNOW IS THE BADASS OF THE BIRD SPECIES. HOLY CRAP IT'S AN EAGLE CARRYING A GODDAMN ANCHOR AND A TRIDENT. AND A FREAKING PISTOL HOMG.

you guys you guys you guys. just read the wiki article for them. it's such intense shit and totally badass. they're CLASSIFIED.

anyone remember the somali pirates hostage situation from two years ago? this was the same fucking team. three bullets guys. THREE. BULLETS. BADASS O MY GOD.

here's what wiki has to say about the SEALs teams:

The unit's acronym ("SEAL") is derived from their capacity to operate at sea, in the air, and on land - but it is their ability to work underwater that separates SEALs from most other military units in the world. The experience gained from operating in the ocean and fresh water battle fields has shaped their identity and, as a result, they are regarded as being amongst the most highly skilled and trained amphibious units in the world. Navy SEALs are trained and have been deployed in a wide variety of missions, including direct action and special reconnaissance operations, unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, and other missions. Without exception, all SEALs are male members of either the U.S. Navy or the Coast Guard. (source)

homg. my admiration for them just skyrocketed you guys. holy crap. i've been in a type of bootcamp before and HOLY CRAP THEIRS IS LIKE BAJILLION TIMES MORE INTENSE. MY GOD. never complaining about that shit again WOW.

i am totally a fangirl now. I WILL FANGIRL SEALS.

:|

in other news, i don't know what to think of the US govt burying osama bin laden's body at some undisclosed location at sea. personally, i'm on the side of being ok with it, but at the same time i'm shocked at how fast they did that. i can see why people are really angry and suspicious about it though. i've been seeing comments on how people want his body stringed at ground zero or his head being displayed as some symbolic triumph. however i'm a bit...well that just makes us animals. but it's totally understandable from both sides because most people want revenge (and tangible proof too i suppose), but on the other hand making his grave as some kind of terrorist worship/fanatic site isn't so hot either.

also all this euphoria over his death needs to be toned down, I'M JUST SAYIN' OK. though now that i think about it, it's just mostly reactionary. i'm sure most everyone will calm down and know it's not really over. i only write this because a bunch of people on my facebook feed are being ridiculous hmph.

Bet on it: England, U.S. ambassadors wager on World Cup clash

Updated Jun 9, 2010 4:01 AM ET

Leaked diplomatic correspondence between Washington and London has revealed the latest bump in the so-called “special relationship” -- a high stakes wager between ambassadors over the outcome of their teams’ World Cup clash, The Times writes in its Wednesday edition.

Louis Susman, the American Ambassador to London, approached his British counterpart in Washington through a staff intermediary to offer a bet on the outcome of Saturday’s game between England and the United States.

“We will understand if you decline, given the outcome of the last such encounter,” Philip Breeden, the American press secretary in London gibed.

Martin Longden, his counterpart in Washington, protested ignorance. “Since the history of English football is long and extensive, in contradistinction to U.S. soccer, I regret that I cannot immediately recall the encounter to which you refer.

"No doubt it is remembered fondly on these shores; we have quite forgotten it, however.”

Longden proposed the terms of the wager: dinner at a Washington DC steakhouse if England triumphs; supper at a London pub on Ambassador Nigel Sheinwald’s dime if the U.S. is the winner.

Breeden accepted, reminding Longden of the outcome of last Anglo-American encounter at the World Cup: a 1-0 victory for the U.S. in Brazil.

Longden would not be deterred. “You should know that the Ambassador takes his steak like American soccer victories — somewhat rare,” he retorted.

AT STAKE IS A STEAK: The e-mails in full:

From: Philip Breeden, US Embassy London

To: Martin Longden, British Embassy Washington DC

Subject: World Cup Bet

Mr. Longden, It has not escaped our attention that a certain sporting event is fast approaching, and that our respective nations will soon be meeting on the fields of South Africa.

My Ambassador has asked me to see if your Ambassador might be interested in a small wager? We will understand if you decline, given the outcome of the last such encounter.

Sincerely, Philip Breeden, U.S. Embassy, London

Mr. Breeden,

Even for such an exceptionally optimistic nation as the United States, I am struck by the confidence with which your Ambassador proposes this wager. It is testament, I assume, to the generosity of your great nation - since the British Ambassador does not anticipate paying out.

Your email does not specify the exact terms of the wager. May I suggest that, in the event of an England victory, the US Ambassador agrees to entertain the British Ambassador at a steak-house of his choosing in downtown DC? And in the event that the United States is able to engineer a fortuitous win over England, then my man will entertain yours at a London pub of his choosing. Loser pays.

Your reference to a previous sporting encounter between our two countries puzzles me. Since the history of English football is long and extensive, in contradistinction to US soccer, I regret that I cannot immediately recall the encounter to which you refer. No doubt it is remembered fondly on these shores; we have quite forgotten it, however.

Are you sure you want to do this?

Yours sincerely, Martin Longden British Embassy Washington DC

Mr. Longden ,

It is with great pleasure, and no small measure of anticipation, that the U.S. Ambassador accepts the terms of the wager. I am surprised, given the well known love of the British for history, that you have forgotten what happened the last time the “special relationship” was tested on the pitch. Of course, given the result, you are to be forgiven for having misplaced that particular episode in your memory banks. I refer of course to the victory of the U.S. over England in the 1950 World Cup.

It is true that our soccer (a fine English word we have kindly preserved for you) history is not as long and illustrious as yours. However, as your generals noted during WWII, we have a unique capability for quickly identifying and advancing talent.

Game on!

Sincerely, Philip Breeden

Very well; it’s a bet!

Incidentally, you should know that the Ambassador takes his steak like American soccer victories - somewhat rare.

Sincerely,

Martin Longden

so i like memes. i think they're fun since i can tell stuff about myself without thinking about it and just respond to the question ;D i don't think that made much sense but it did in my head.

right-o. i came across a birthday meme and thought it was interesting since i learned some new history.

ok it's not that interesting...

but i still did it.

Go to Wikipedia and type in your birthday (month and day). Then you write down 3 events, 3 births, 3 deaths, 3 holidays.

awesome.

April 24 i like my birthday cause it's even and even sided. 424. AMIRITE? i think this is why i also like my last name cause it's even too. sort of.

Events
1184 BC – The Greeks enter Troy using the Trojan Horse (traditional date). sexeh.
1704 – The first regular newspaper in the United States, the News-Letter, is published in Boston, Massachusetts.
2007 – Gliese 581 d discovered by a Chilean observatory and believed to be a planet capable of holding extraterresial life. :O

Births
1743 – Edmund Cartwright, British inventor (d. 1823)
1924 – Sir Clement Freud, British writer, radio personality, and politician (d. 2009) remember my obsession with evenness? this guy has the ultimate evenness. 42424. OMFG. i wonder if he ever had fascinating conversations with his granddad too.
1942 – Richard M. Daley, American politician. i sort of know someone who was once his advisor. it was interesting to hear stories haha.

Deaths
1924 – G. Stanley Hall, American psychologist (b. 1844) this mofo had a fabulous beard.
1942 – Lucy Maud Montgomery, Canadian author (b. 1874) omg i luff her. she is the reason why i got into reading. forreal. i was very blah about reading but then i got addicted after that.
1986 – Wallis Simpson, American wife of Edward, Duke of Windsor (b. 1896) ha i had a period of just reading and watching documentaries about her and the ~love~ between her and king edward. it was fascinating.

Holidays
Australia – Kapyong Day a day of remembrance for Korean War veterans, named after the Battle of Kapyong in 1951
Nepal - Democracy Day, commemorating the reinstitution of parliament in 2006
Niger - Concord Day, commemorating the 1995 peace accord ending the Tuareg Rebellion

so i know nothing about these holidays.

well that was fun.

i just took my ethics midterm.

i totally failed i know i did. i mean there is just no freaking way i could get an A on that because i think i was missing a bunch of ethical and legal standards for each question.

so fail.

plus the questions were really fucking hard. i mean just mind boggling fuck my brains out.

question one had a scenario where a therapist just recently moved to a city and was excited about how awesome it was (now that i think about it...i think i was supposed to put an competency ethical issue here o crap). a local priest send a young grieving couple to the therapist because they just recently lost their infant son. the therapist instantly recognizes the wife as the babysitter to a niece when she was younger. as the therapy progressed, the therapist realized that the husband was abusive but the wife doesn't wan't to say anything about it. so obviously the therapist starts wondering whether or not foul play was involved with the death of their baby and is extremely concerned for the wife's welfare. anywhoo the therapist goes home and the spouse brings home a business partner for dinner. later on the therapist realizes this business partner is actually the mother of the wife and the mother somehow finds out that the therapist is taking care of her daughter. later on while making appetizers (no seriously it said that), the mother waltzes in and speaks about her concern for her daughter. apparently the husband was previously married to another woman who ~mysteriously disappeared~ and he also has a "serious domestic abuse record". this of course brings a lot of concern to the therapist, who was not aware of this information before. the therapist wonders what to do since the 2 week vacation is coming up and the therapist was planning on going to a 2 week cruise.

the questions asks what ethical and legal issues are involved & what would you do?

YEA

YEA THIS SUCKS HUH.

my brain just about exploded when i read the case study.

this was the first question and i started to freak out because i seriously had no idea what to write. the next two case studies were alright.

question two had a 17 year old boy walk in to a clinic where an intern was just finishing up work. he said that he needed to ~talk badly~ cause he felt someone was out to get him. since he was only 17, the intern told him he would only have 5 sessions without the consent of his parents but after the 5th session they would have to seek out the parents (this is part of the Illinois Mental Health Code...should look up the one for cali). during the interview he was resistant, barely answering any questions so in the 3rd session the intern decided to assess him through different tests. the intern looked them up online to see what was best for those who were ~resistant~ and printed them off the website for the client to take. cause obviously you could just print them off a website without paying for them. the supervisor agrees to score and analyze the data also. after that was finished the intern didn't find anything significant. the 6th session came around and the client never showed up, so the intern called his home out of concern and spoke with his mother. she had no idea where he was either and couldn't really give a lot of information about him. 2 months later the boy showed up and said he wanted to kill himself, so he came back for therapy.

the question asked what the ethical & legal issues were, what actions should be taken, and when would confidentiality be broken.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. i was able to easily answer the third part of the question but omfg the rest raped my brain.

question three was easier. ok not really. question three was 30 points, while question 2 was 20 and question 1 was 15. HAHAHA.

well whatever. a midterm is a midterm and it's over so i can't do anything about it.

...

ok i'm just saying that to comfort myself. the multiple choice was horrifying as was the true/false because we had to write out why we chose the answer we chose using the standards we learned in class. and there's hundreds.

the only questions i knew i got right were the two short answer ones because they were straightforward. so that's what...5 points each, 10 points total out of 100.

yea total fail.

i'm not going to think about it anymore though. it's spring break for me starting now and i'm going to relax my brains out before next week when i have to head out to internship sites for interviews. that's probably when my brain will go into overdrive and explode.

i bought this movie back in september, never got around to watching it until today. i had some dvd problems cause of some regional crap that comes with it (blah i say, blah!). main reason i bought it though was because i couldn't find it online and i like the two main actors, so i said O TO HELL WITH IT ALL I'LL BUY IT.

University lecturer Yu Jung (Lee Na Young) does not trust her surroundings and does not believe in love. Troubled by a traumatic past, she has attempted suicide many times. At her aunt's urging, she reluctantly enters therapy and meets convicted murderer and death row prisoner Yun Su (Kang Dong Won). Drawn to each other, two people with no will to live find a new motivation for life: a meeting every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

yea we all know how this will end. i know it, you know it, we all know it. but! that shouldn't deter you.

i tend to “tear up” when i watch some movies, but i never really full out cry. i mean i say “OMFG I TOTALLY BAWLED!!!” to people, but in reality just a couple of tears and a smile and even then the tears aren’t pouring down my face like waterfalls. it’s just a momentary feeling of “o that’s sad…”

but this movie, i sobbed. well, i didn't cry until the last 5 minutes of the movie -- the love confession scene, my word. i don't think a movie has ever made my heart ache until that scene (except maybe that miracle movie). call me sappy or a romantic, doesn't matter -- the last five minutes of that movie made the entire 2 hours worth it (yea it's pretty long).

minus the ~cliches~ that show up in a sad korean movie (impending death/doom, orphans, rape, onoestragicpast) and the portrayal of the people in prison (nice prison guards say what?!), this movie had a good message regarding forgiveness, redemption and the value of life. it also dealt with the sensitive issue of capital punishment, but in a good way. it’s kind of like dead man walking, but a love story.

in terms of acting, i think LNY & KDW did well. the only scene that i found myself not drawn to, when i was supposed to, was the forgiveness scene between the victim's mother and Yun Su. i mean goddamnit that scene is supposed to be the pivotal scene of the film and the whole time i was all "...meh. meh." ah well you can't expect everyone to act well all the time.

aah i love this movie though. it's one worth watching.

o but you should probably have something funny to watch after (here i shall do the favor for you). or tissues.
